I’ve recently had the opportunity to chat with Sam Chereskin and Whit Rigali of Misadventure Co., a local distillery specializing in old world vodka (a vodka often found in Russia and Poland). What’s special about Misadventure is they want you to have your cake and drink it too! What does that mean exactly? It’s probably my favorite part about their business. They take unused baked goods before they go to waste and give them life through their distilling process to make their smooth, high quality vodka (believe me, I tried it, and I loved it!). Local and sustainable? Yes, please!
How Stories of Misadventure Created Misadventure Co.
An idea 4 years in the making first started out as Sam and Whit met happenstance at a bar over whiskey and exchanged stories. This led to a conversation on how they can combine their ideas of creating locally crafted spirits for bartenders to use and how they can provide a sustainable product. This ultimately led to the creation of Misadventure Co. and their first product, Misadventure Vodka. This vodka is made from excess baked goods locally in North County, San Diego.
When they explained their product, you knew it was special by the way their eyes lit up talking about this project, the hard work they put into it, and finally seeing this product on shelves and in local bars. We heard about their trial and errors, to how they perfected their process in distilling this vodka to make something they truly love and put their heart into.
We were able to try Misadventure both by itself and as a cocktail called Fools Paradise that you can try at The Compass. First off, I’m not a vodka person at all, but once they popped the bottle and poured some in a glass for us to sip on, I’m a believer! When you would normally get a smell similar to a remnant of rubbing alcohol from a bottle of vodka, you open this up and don’t smell that at all. And the best part? You can sip on it by itself or enjoy alone on the rocks!
Have Your Own Misadventure
After getting to chat with Sam and Whit, I’ve learned Misadventure is more than a vodka. Misadventure stems from stories of their family histories that began generations ago and stories they continue to unfold throughout this journey themselves.
This vodka allows you to have your own misadventure while doing good at the same time since it’s made by saving grains and removes gluten. They even say so themselves “our vodka tastes better at night, feels better in the morning.” So grab a bottle, a bunch of your friends, and start your misadventure!
I’m glad I started my misadventure at The Compass. We were able to pair Fools Paradise with their Peach and Pork Waffles, Bacon Wrapped Dates, and their Korean Steak Tacos. And everything we tried was phenomenal! This is one of those moments I actually wished I lived closer to North County just so I can eat there again, but I suppose this means it’ll be worth the drive next time!
